Today i got a 6" Tiger Oscar for free from an add on my local websites classifieds section. the seller had it in a 33g tank. it has a pretty bad case of HITH and one cloudy eye. iv never had to deal with this problem before so i have some questions. whats the best way to cure this? can it be cured? do i just need to do lots of water changes and feed him a proper diet? will the holes eventually go away? will his eye ever heal? such an eye sore to look at (no pun intended) besides how the fish feels :(

Thanks.

my oscars both got cloudy eyes before, and one had a little HITH. I have managed to stop the HITH and it's healing nicely. For the HITH I enhanced their food with a multivitamin, specifically adding it to earth worms, lots of water changes.. about 3 times a week, and some melafix. If that doesn't do the trick then you may have to treat for heximita, with some anti-parasite tablets. For the cloudy eye some one told me to use aquarium salt and raise the temp in the tank. hope that helps.

i aggree with kperkin.

And dont expect results right away. HITH takes a while to heal. Especially if its bad when you start treatment. Just keep on doing the water changes and good diet and he'll eventually heal up. Give it a couple months to be a really noticeable difference.

Clean fresh water! And a varied diet. Change the water as many times a week as you need to in order to keep nitrates below 20 ppm (ideally below 10 ppm while healing). Feed a varied diet with veggie material and vitamins. I wouldn't waste money on meds and salt and Melafix and whatnot. I'd keep the water pristine and in less than 2 wks you should notice a big difference. That's my advice.

i don't know if the water changes would be enough to cure the cloudy eye.... or maybe i was just too impatient, but i tried changing the water a lot and i didn't get results fast enough. the salt really made it heal faster.

Most 'cloudy eye' caused from bad water quality is like.......scar tissue almost over their eye. It takes about 2 wks to heal completely with pristine water but you'll notice improvement as soon as 24-48 yrs. I've gotten quite a few new fish with it and never once used anything but fresh clean water. Your fish probably would've healed fine without the salt :-) But that's just my experience. Everyone's got their own.

Great advise, as stated just keep up the water changes to maintain the best water params as possible
