I've had him for about 2 and 1/2 hours an he's already escaped, I have a lid but the stupid previous owner of my tank cut the corners off so that wires could fit through, anyway I put him back in and he seems ok, I covered the corners with tape to make sure it doesn't happen again.
I'm a bit worried because he's covered in fluff from the carpet, also he fell from about 3 feet, will he be ok

He will be fine. The fist time mine got out, he was completely dry when I found him. He didn't kill himself all the way for 2-3 more years.

Ok, he doesn't have any fluff on him anymore, can they actually move on land like a snake?

I would assume so. The thing that saved it was the fact that they can breathe air. He prbly could've been out for quite a while and still would've survived! Any pictures? I just got one last week and love this fish already. Very very snake-like.

I guess I'm extremely lucky. I have holes in my lid, too and none of my 3 have ever escaped.

If its acting normal it means it will be ok. Just seal off everything...use some duct tape or something to make sure there's no space it can fit its head through. That's what i do in tanks with small eels

These little buggers are expert escapees. Check for cracks and holes on your lid and seal them up. Great fish despite their Harrowing adventures. :D
