Ok, so after weeks of trying i think ive finally managed to pair up my gold severums. They are swimming together all the time and digging holes in my gravel. There has been no lip locking ( none that ive actually witnessed) but the pair keep slapping each other with their tails and shuddering / shivvering next to each other. On further inspection i can see the females tube is starting to drop (pretty sure it is anyways, its a lot more visable today) however the males has yet to drop. So what u guys think? is breeding gonna be imminent do you think? They seem to be spending a lot of time together and this tail slapping and shivvering is supposedly a pre mating / pairing up ritual, please correct me if im wrong. All tips and advice is welcome as are all comments.:)

they are now both paying a lot of attention to th stones and slates that are in the tank, looks like they are 'cleaning' them. Man i hope i get a spawn off this pair.

Oh yeah definetly, if this is new behavior and they are starting to clean possible egg sites that is a sure sign that breeding will be close.

Hope this helps!:)

Thanks very much for the reply:)

The pair have not stopped cleaning various bits of rock/ slate since my last post, there is lots of digging, cleaning, tail whipping and swimming together so i really hope your right and i can spawn my fish. The male is a handsome specimine so any thing that comes from him is sure to be strong and healthy. I cant think of anything more interesting than having fish spawn in your own tank, and i really hope this pair does.

PS. Did i mention the shaking / shivering? lots of that goiing on too :)

Yippee i got eggs :) This morning i did a 25% water change and about 1 pm fed some live crickets, which the male gobbed up and didnt leave any for the female. Ive heared they can help bring the fish into the mood for spawning and it seems to have done the trick. Its 18.55 as im typing this, and the fish have been spawning from around 16.00 and they are still going. I estimate around 500-600 eggs so far maybee a little less, but as i said they are still spawning as i type. Will upload a pic of the happy couple and eggs when spawning is over, wooot im so happy:headbang2

19.27 spawning stopped, the male and female are fanning the eggs now and occasionally the male will make another pass over the eggs. I hope this dude has lead in his pencil. The female looks tired, and some colour has drained from her. So a few questions if i may

- Do i now add some meth blue to the water to prevent fungus or shall i not?
- Do i start to feed the pair up now that spawning is over i imagine they are both tired and probably hungry?
- How long for the eggs to hatch, temp is about 83c
- what preperations should i make for the (hopefully) wigglers when they hatch?
- How long till free swimming?
- Apart from hatching brine shrmip, can i feed the little dudes that hikari first bites food and/ or crushed flake food?

Sorry for the bombardment of questions, but id really like to raise this batch up and any advice or help is most welcome.

You seem like you want some answers and I understand how frustrating it might be, so let me try to help - let me start off by saying I've never bread sev's, but my JD's have spawned a few times so I'll just see if that might help you.

I kept feeding my fish as normal - I did notice that when they have a spawn they did tend to not eat as much as normal - if thats related I'm not sure just something I observed with my JD's.

With JD's it takes usually 2-3 days for the eggs to hatch. I've never kept any of my batches past wigglies stage. What I have been told is to prepare the baby brine shrip and you can use crushed flakes but you have to make sure its very very fine.

Hope it helps or that you get more breed specific answers!

I have successfully raised angel fish and after several attempts I found it best to remove the fertilized eggs. The eggs would usually be on a piece of shale or even the filter tube. I would move the shale to a 10 gal and put an airstone close so it would emulate the mother fanning the eggs. I put a small amount of hydrogen peroxide (2 caps full) to prevent fungus, but you can also use meth blue. After a few days the eggs become wigglers and then the wigglers will detach from the shale, you can even help this process by gently fanning near eggs that are still stuck together or to the shale. After the fry consume the egg yolk they will become free swimmers and will be ready to eat. Now replace the airstone with a sponge filter. Now you begin feeding the baby brine shrimp or Hikari first bites. I always used brine shimp for the first month (brineshirmpdirect.com) has some good instructions on how to raise them. you will need to perform daily cleaning with a small stiff tube. I taped a piece of air tube to a scewer. siphon any debris with will be dead brine shrimp and thier shells. Now continue with a 50% water change. You should feed two or three times a day if possible. I did twice a day, and clean up / water change once a day. This is a lot of work for the first couple of months, but when they get bigger they are easier to care for.

There are many other resources, but this has worked for me.

Good luck.
