hi guys need some advice on a future tank (already have option to buy) so the tanks a 7x3x3 i already own a 6x2x2 will be using this as the sump i understand i can keep some smaller cat sharks in here possibly just a species aquariam with say a marbled cat shark can anyone give me advice in general on equipment and decor say live rock no live rock and any other bits i may need to know or need for the tank thanks.

A bite of rock is good for both biological and for hiding spots. You can mix several species of the catsharks or bamboo sharks together. Both types also do well with the smaller rays.

When doing aquascaping, remember these guys like caves and outcroppings to hide in during the day time.

what other spieces would you recomend i was looking at blue spotted rays seem the most common but apparently there not as hardy as the shops say, i ddnt think my tank was large enough to house one for life could i house more than one? i would put rock in the sump for bio and make caves for shark

The best small SW ray would be the Cortez Stingray (Urobatis maculatus) - about 16" total length. Can be kept in a tank that is at least 6' long x 2' wide - if you have very little rock work.

The 7' long x 3' wide would better if you plan to keep with the marbled catshark. Even then - it would be best to limit the amount of rock in the tank, and only keep the shark & the ray. NO other fishes.

would it be easier for me to just purchase an 8x4?? make the shark more comfortable. i dont want to keep anything with the shark or ray or both just want them to have a good home. ive noticed through the threads people are harsh on the shark subject but with good reason i think. i mean my lfs tried to sell me an epualette shark last year for my 6x2x2 its very easy to just buy one on impulse (wich i did not) i researched and found i could not care for this animal and held off till now, i can get a big tank now my shed has been remodeled:)

IF you can get a 8'x4' tank - then be all means I would suggest doing so. When it comes to tank or pond size for keep any shark or ray - it's best to go with the biggest you can afford.

As for Eppies - they are wonderful sharks for home aquaria - often referred to as "walking sharks" since they spend a good deal of time walking instead of swimming.

If you want an Eppie for a 480 gallon (8' x 4') tank - then I would suggest looking into either the Papuan Eppie (Hemiscyllium hallstromi) or Indonesian Speckled Eppie (H. freycineti) which grows to be about 30" instead of about 42" as the Common Eppie (H. ocellatum) does.

kk the largest i can afford with equipment is 10x5 but i dnt have space in my outhouse i only have space for 8 foot max length and 4 foot width. i like the looks of the bamboo shark- the ones that arnt actually cat sharks and striped when juvenile but they go a brown or grey colour when older would one of these do well in an 8x4 or x3???
