I realize the common snapping turtle is going to grow to be huge.I have huge questions..
If a snapping turtle is found in a neighborhood creek can it be compatible with freshwater?
I think ill take a few walks down the creek or to the LFS and get a baby snapping or young adult.I realize the pet store turtle is going to be maybe healthy but ill take my chances I'm willing to take good care of the guy.
Before I start off on that adventure..I have time and some money to start a snapping tank..I just need a supply list and some suggestions on what is sufficient.

1. Heater
2. Thermometer
3. water conditioners? (any special type?name them.)
4. air stone/air pump
5. awesome filtration system,
6.What size tank for a juvenile close to nearly born?I'm probably going to spend the most on the tank right? What size is o.k to start out with?
7.What will I need to start buying it to feed it when its young and at what age do I switch food?
Pretty basic questions I'm studying them currently I most likely will Find all of that here on the forum and on the internet. But I wanted to start a thread here and ask the experienced themselves.

That and any advice and I plan on starting out with a newly born nearly..or a very small one so I can plan for its future now but still enjoy it at a fair price to start off.Thank you in advance I'll be researching them as I wait for reply's.

Hi I am no expert but if you are getting a small one you can get a 50 gallon long and that will last you a long time because they take very long to grow. Also, when he gets bigger you can buy one of those plastic kiddy pools. For feeding I would go with rosey reds and minnows .

Oh well I meant the platy and molly for feeders at first I think at a young age..The 50 gallon tank then Is what I'll get for the first part of his life.

Ok that's good do you breed the plattys and mollies cause that's even better because you know he won't have to worry about diseases from the fish at a young age

I honestly dont know much about them except i've seen a 4'+ snapping turtle at a herp store and could only think:

1) how do you move such a large heavy turtle?

2) what does it eat?

3) and lastly was that i definitely wouldnt want to get my hands any where near those jaws...

They actually can grow relatively fast - mine has gone from a hatchling to a 12 pound monster in about ten years. A 50 gallon could work for a couple years if you get your snapper small enough. Remember that these guys can easily live fifty years - not a pet to take on if you aren't in it for the long run.
