I'm not a fisherman by any means, probably haven't been fishing in 10+ years so I made plenty of mistakes on this trip. I had the opportunity to take my 5 year old son fishing at my Aunt and Uncle's lake house in Mass over the 4th of July weekend. I caught a bunch of 1 lb Large Mouth off of the dock. My son was interested in trying it so I taught him how to cast it out and reel in. We were using his "kid rod" (don't really know how to describe it) with 8 lb test. He cast it out, I got behind him to help him hold the rod when the Bass hit the line. He started to reel it in and when the fish jumped out of the water my eyes couldn't believe what I saw. He got the fish up to the dock, it was directly below us so I tried to lift it out of the water. The rod just bent and on the highest drag setting couldn't get it out. I tried my best to get the fish up on the dock but once its weight was out of the water, the weight of the fish broke the line. I'm still kicking myself for not having a net handy. We got a good look at it and by my best guess it was between 14-18 inches and at least 6 lbs.

Not a bad experience for my son on his first time out. He ended up landing a few smaller ones but I really wish I had a picture of this one. Maybe next time....

cool experience but with a fish bigger than the rods means to get it up you just gotta reach down and grab it by the mouth, can't be scared of em

i remember as a kid, i caught a fat 17 incher. it was a female full of eggs. this guy tried telling me to throw it back

pshh, yea,............ no! fish eggs is a delicacy in my culture. it was dinner that night

the fish population in that lake didn't miss a beat even though i took that one

anyways, congrats ts, the greatest thing is that you got to experience that with your son. i remember how happy i was too

That is terrible. Every adult female taken that is of breeding size is a hit to the population. This is why in my area bass are nearly gone. 3 years ago, I would see 4-10 pounders coming out regularly, now once a season we see a 2-3 pounder. The big fish need to stay and breed.

it does sound terrible, but it tasted great

no seriously, i was a kid then, and now i'd probably let it go. I can't say anywhere else but i've been fishing that lake for over 20 years and we've kept hundreds of lunkers 5-10 pounds over the years. the large mouth come out from the ground or something, they won't go away.

I'd like to come stay at this lake for a month or so!
