Just got this today, have wanted a Florida/Spotted for months and some finally came in :)
Pretty pricey around here, there came 4 gars at 6" and they cost ~190$.
So i just took one, even though i always wanted to keep two.

He is pretty skinny, but the store had already gotten him off live food.
He is in a growout tank with a few small jack dempsey cichlids until he is big enough for the 200G tank.

Good luck with him, nice looking gar...but fatten him up for sure.

ok thanks, i'll think about moving the JD then!

good choice, gars and cichlids equal disaster. cuz they cichlids will pick on the gar and stress him out.

The poly's should be fine, they're good tankmates for gars. Not sure about the cat but I'm sure others have tried that and will have info for you. With mine the cichlids don't specifically bother the gar at all, but the chasing etc. that cichlids get up to tends to stress my gar, he seems to get caught in the middle and just wants to avoid it...and he gets stressed. So I removed some fish and everything is fine now.

no problem, i have more tanks, will move the cichlids tomorrow :)

So its not a good idea to mix it with cichlids when bigger?
I have a few Polypterus, a CK, Lima shovelnose´s, Jaguar cichlids, a Green Terror and a few others in the 200G which i was gonna put the gar in when bigger.

the polys are fine. in my opinion the best tankmates for gars. if you decide to house him with the lima then make sure the gar isnt to small cuz he will become a snack for the lima. other than that i dont know of any other problems that might happen with the lima. the CK should be ok. and i would have to say avoid keeping him with the jags and the green terror. if you have any more questions about the gar feel free to ask me and i will do my best to help. by the way nice gar and good luck with him.

What type of gar is that. I bought one very similar for $20 labeled as a aligator gar. His nose seems to long and narrow to be a alligator. He doesnt look like a florida gar either. I just got mine to eat thawed shrimp
