I have threads going over on Aquaria Central, but forgot to put one on here of my new discus. I ordered them from Discus Hans. There are a total of 7, 3 Brilliant Turquoise, 2 Red Turquoise, and 2 Cobalts. They started out at about 2 1/2" and are now pushing 3". Not bad in 2 1/2 weeks. I feed them 6 times a day and do daily water changes. For anyone looking to do the planted tank for juvies, it is alot of work! I spend a good hour everyday vaccing and cleaning that tank. So if you don't have that kind of time for one tank, go bare bottom. On the up side of a planted tank for juvies. They do not hide. They spent the first evening timid, but since then they are front and center, shoaling, foraging, etc.

Good luck to you. Personally, I think it's insane to try to grow out juvies in a planted tank. There is no way to get all the poop out, but I wish you well. :)

Thank you. I respect your opinion and I know that traditionally bare bottom is what is done. You may very well be right, I hope I prove you wrong though. It is very time consuming vaccing the tank as it is a 6 foot long, 110 gal tank. My nitrates are rarely above 5 and never reach 10 in the tank. I vac the substrate every day. So hopefully I will be one of the few who grow them big planted. They get fed 6 times a day a variety of food to include Han's mix, blood worms, and 4 different foods from Ken's fish.

I too wish you the best! I tried to be "that guy" who could grow out juvies in a planted tank. I wish I would of listened to the people who knew what they were talking about. All I have to say is it was a mistake! How do you keep your plants happy with daily wc's? You must use a ton of ferts!

I had ordered from Hans now 4weeks ago. So I missed out on his simplydiscus special! u lucky dogfish u!! :p

they look great tho a bit on the thin side. but you got them to come front & center quicker than I did! took me 2weeks! & they went on a hunger strike for 5days upon arrival!

so I can see yours will do well.

Q? - han's mix was pretty elaborate. I think that's why mine went on a hunger strike! his mix is like filet mignon for a dog & sushi for a cat! :tropicalf:asianarow

did you make or did he sell some to you?

also, which one is your cobalts? I thought they would be pure solid sky blue with a little pattern in their finnage. probably can't see their colors yet until they settle in & grow out a bit.

I use current dual satellite & some colored quickly, but my 2 brownies just today started to lighten up & get some color/patterns out. I love the way they look when I have the blue actinics on.

hope to see more pics when yours grow more. good luck & enjoy!

Yeah, I had been wanting to get 5 but with the free shipping was able to get 7 instead. I was pretty excited.

They will thicken up as they grow. They have grown a good 1/2" since I got them.

so I can see yours will do well.

Thanks

He emailed me the recipe and I made it myself before the discus got here. I wanted to have the food they were used to on hand.

It is the flash on the camera that makes it hard for you to tell. The Cobalts are mostly blue (not the sky blue like Blue Diamonds) with a little markings on their fins as well as having vertical bars (also unlike the blue diamonds). They have not completely colored up. It is my understanding that they won't until they mature.

I have 200 watts over the tank at 8000 K. It has enough blue in it to bring out their colors. Not too bright, only about 2 wpg. They seem to like it. I also have a lighter "planted look" back ground which seems to bring their color out.

hope to see more pics when yours grow more. good luck & enjoy!

I will definitely be taking pictures often. I have been posting quite a few over on AC. I want others opinions as I go as to their look. If they start to stunt, I want to know early, so I can move them.

I decided to go planted after doing extensive reading over on Simply and other sites. I also talked with a couple of Simply members about my ideas and while I know it will be labor intensive, I think the fish will be happier with an aqua scape. I know so far that the old adage that discus are shy does not appear to be the case in my tank. They have plenty of places to hide so I guess they don't feel the need to.
