SOCAL
hey MFK guys, im new to this forum but i love it already. since i am new to cichlids and their compatiblity, i was wondering if you guys can help me out.

60gal tank

1 4" jack dempsey
1 3.5" green terror
1 3.25" tiger oscar
1 3.25" albino tiger oscar
1 4" pleco

the jack dempsey is the dominant fish in the tank. he bullies both the oscar and the GT. the GT, i thought would be more dominant is actually getting bullied by the JD and the oscars. they punk him around til he pretty much stays at the top corner of the tank to stay out of JD and oscars way, and tries to hide behind the filter. will this aggression towards the GT continue or go away as they mature? when it comes down to it, how compatible are these guys living together as an adult? oh yea, i will be upgrading to a bigger tank when the time is due.

thanks in advance,
kenny

I don't know much about Oscars, but I do know most of the experts on them here recommend 55 gallons minimum for only 1 of them, a much larger tank for tankmates. Ditto with the Plecostomus.

I was going to upgrade my tank larger and decided to get an Oscar to grow out in my 55, the JD ended up killing him while I was at work. IME the JD will get mean faster than the rest of the fish due to it being the smallest at adult size, it matures the fastest (Many JD's are imbred, puny and shy, those that aren't will definitely do this). It doesn't matter how big and strong a 12 year old kid is, a 20 year old will probably win the fight. This is why he is probably beating on the others, he's dominant (for now). The aggression probably won't stop until the others grow larger than the JD, the Oscars will probably rule the roost. Living together as adults, it should work, given a correctly sized tank of course, someone else could help you with a suggestion on tank size however, my experience ends with a 55.

If you end up not upgrading however, the GT and JD can be kept in the 60 with care to water changes and good filtration.

thats what ive heard about the oscars as well concerning the tank minimum. say if i end up getting rid of the oscar and just keeping the JD and GT in the 60. how well will these guys get along? knowing that the JD have always been really aggresive to the GT. the GT just tries to swim away for dear life and hide.

I think you might need a bigger tank, but if you have less objects in the tank you should be fine, because they'll have more room. I don't know what to say besides that.

in terms of aggression, the stocklist should work, but you need a bigger tank for them

Ditto the bigger tank. The jd is likely to be the low man before too long, as the gt will come into its own around the 6-7" mark. At that point it will be at least as big as the jd and beafier. The oscars should grow fast enough to not get hastled by either the jd or the gt. But in a 60? Probably just the jd; a little tight for everything else when full grown.

it could work with just the JD and GT but they can both be aggressive. is it a 4ft tank or 3ft. i'd pick just a GT as a wet pet or wait till you can get atleast a 120 or 125G tank for all 4 that you want

I will probably get rid of the oscars and just keep the jd and gt. I don't see why everyones saying I should watch out for the gt aggression when he's scared of every other fish in the tank and does not show aggression back to the rest. Maybe he will live up to his name once he gets bigger?
