this is my sump desighn i need advice on it if it is good or not and if it will work the tank is a 180 gallonsump.jpg

where the bio media

ive never built a sump or really looked in to them but isn't this how all of them work?

I assume where you have "filter" is where the bio is? Pretty much it then. Place some socks on your drains, water flows through the bio media to the return pump back up to the tank. Done......

I'm going to have to say negative on this one. Not going to work. Check out the DIY Filter Forum to get a better idea of how these things work. if you do it right then a DIY filter is the best way to go. I love mine. This one though, not gonna' cut it

If he runs a sock on the in (drain) and the water passes through the filter (bio), why wouldnt it work?

look at the level of his pump and his "filter". Either his pump will be sucking air or his "filter" will be under water which is no good at all. Plus by "filter" i think he means like filter clothe or something, not bio material. If he were to change up the levels and materials a little, it might work fine. But, there are much better designs than this on this site that do a better job.

But who knows, maybe this guy has just created the worlds greatest filter with this design. wont know til its built and tested. This is just my personal opinion ;)

Heres a link to my thread on my DIY sump and overflow build.
You can use submerged media such as ceramic rings which would be better than anything else, but have some mech before hitting them.

How big is your sump, and what pump will you be going with?

ahh... I see where you are going. I was looking at it a bit differently.....

if the water level is about halfway up the sump and the filter section is bio, all he really needs to do is place a sock or some kind of filter floss or mech on the input to the sump (drain) and keep the pump submerged and he should be good to go....

I wasnt looking at the water level as really being that low. Good points!
