Hello,
I have a 265 gallon freshwater tank hooked up to a 90 gallon sump that's 4 feet long and pretty tall. The water drains into it and trickles down through 50 gallons of bio balls yo the bottom and then goes under a piece of acrylic to the return section.
Poor planning by me, it was my first time experimenting with a sump, I made it so its extremely difficult to access it. I cant get to the bottom of it because of all the bio balls and the sump is pretty much stuck under the tank unless I tank some of the stand apart.
I am seeing a think layer of gray stuff on the bottom of it and I am am assuming it is detritus or detritus worms. Not that familier with it. Well the problem is I can't reach it. I've read conflicting reports on how this affects the aquarium. My only idea is to out some kind of invert down there to help clean up but that would be a stretch.
I already have little snails that managed to get in there that look like they probably in the hundreds down there now. I assume they eat some detritus but it is way more than they could consume. Anyone have suggestions?
Thanks!
