So I got the basic idea from Aquarium Co OP. Tweaked a few things like the entrance of water to the pads. There will be 2 baffles top and bottom so water can flow evenly through the pads.

Any suggestions that can improve the design?20180724_150755.jpg

Assuming you meant it to be solid, I might consider adding a handful of small holes along the bottom of the right side baffle so some water would drain through the bottom of the biofilter. Otherwise, I'd wonder if water was bypassing the lower right quadrant to overflow the top into the final chamber. Except for that, I didn't see anything else.

I was thinking about ways around that too.. hmm. Perhaps adding a series of baffles in the bio chamber would work. It would make only make cleaning a tad more difficult.

I've always seen baffles in sumps placed to where the water flow is forced either above the baffle or below it when entering the next chamber. This design looks like there would be a lot of bypass and water that pools up in the chambers because the openings are all located through the middle.

Im no expert, just my $.02

This is what I am talking about. Same basic design, but forces the water to flow through everything instead of kinda just passing through.

The only problem I see with this design would be the filter media at the bottom would become clogged first and to clean it you would have to remove it all to get to the fist layer.
With the filter arranged in a side stack you can remove the first layer and clean as often as needed
I think the original design would work there just needs to be outlets at the bottom of the baffling before the return pumps . Not at the top
