My sump question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Agreed, those look like drain pipes coming in, but I'm not sure what else I'm looking at or what your problem is

Wasnt really sure if the lines should be above water or if its ok belo. May not even be a problem I was just kinda guessing how they should run. The socks on the lines are correct then I'm assuming.

So im assuming by intake you mean those hoses bring water to the sump? Find some way to rig a filter sock after those. Your mechanical filtration seems to be pretty nonexistent.

As far as having them above or below the water line, i prefer to have mine empty below the water line. Its quieter that way. If they empty out above the sump water line its louder, but you get good aeration of your water in the sump, so its a mixed bag. I dont know a whole lot about that type of filter sock but it looks like they are on the overflow lines loosely. That could allow waste to escape and muck up your bio media. If so, they should be secured tightly. If they are on tightly, then nevermind. Other than that I dont see any issues from that one pic, but if you could do a whole sump pic we could probably give more feedback if you like.

Best is to get other type of filter socks, those are not that great, Also filter socks do best if they are out of the water mostly or at least partially.

My sumps filter sock is maybe 6" above the water line.

I like Steveo's set up. Personally i think that socks need to be at least partially out of the water, otherwise they aren't going to be filtering anything. Those "socks" look more like media bags, which aren't going to filter very much of anything from the water. To get the height needed for the socks to work correctly you will likely have to add a tower, or like Steveo did use a garbage bin and drill out one or two holes for the socks to sit in. The biggest thing to remember when doing it though is to make sure you can remove the socks easily.

Exactly. Im working on a long video explaining my entire set up and what everything does. 100% make that sock easy to remove.
