Last Sunday I bought christmas led lights from lowes and decided to make a light strip. I just wanted to see how much light they would actually put out. Theres 50 lights and it only uses 3.82 watts. I built a hood and installed the lights. It definately works but not as bright as i wanted it to be. This is only a practice run...I will be making another one with more lights!

I just read Zennzzo's thread and cant wait to see his project too...

nice! where are all the wires and how did you get the LEDs to face straight down?

Well right now the wires are showing on the top. This project was just to see how much light they would produce in a hood. I'll find a pic that shows the wires. On my next one i'll pack the led's more tight and get more lights. They were only $6 at lowes.

I got em to face straight down with 3/8" holes. But theyre not exactly a circle. They have a small notch on one side where you can replace the bulb. So I used my dremmel to make notches. They fit pretty snug.

Very nice but black absurbs color use white paint if you want it to reflect or be more brith

I put a base coat of white on and almost went that route but I had a can of pretty reflective silver laying around and just used that. Maybe i'll try white next time

Cool, It looks like some good thought went into the project.

For low lighting at night the christmas leds work well. Due to their small individual size and not having a directional lens I would say their function is limited to night lighting though. I have had 3 strings in the canopy of my 125 for the last year and am pleased with them. They have a nice relaxing effect when the other lights are off.

i actually didnt make it for any one tank. all the tanks i have running are too big for it. But i guess i could pull out an old tank and take a pic...
