Hey Forum :D,

I finally settled down for the night and wanted to post pictures of my first tank stand build. Feel free to make comments. Im aware that it is SUPER tall. I WANTED it this way for a couple reasons. (and im 6'6"). The stand is probably over engineered. Ill look forward to comments on that. :nilly:

Another thing is how can i make a nice cabinet door (or two) on the front of this thing without spending a ton of money. I would like it to me somewhere around 28L x 36H with trim. That way i will still be able to fit all my buckets into the stand. :grinno:

Dimensions are 37"L x 15.5"W x 48"H

Thanks for the input.

Hey man! What sucks is that I can see green grass outside your garage door and I had to shovel 6" of snow off my drive this morning! lol

Your stand looks great! I like projects that are unique. Like Randy would say. "Listen dawg, you took something and made it your own!" :)

What size tank is going to go on this monster? My only concern is that you don't have any diagonal bracing. On a conventional stand, the center of gravity is much lower than your's. The stand can take simple bumps pretty good. With your's though, with all that weight sitting so high compared to the width of the base, an accidental bump on the side may cause it to collapse sideways. A basic rule of thumb is diagonal bracing is reccomended anytime the height is greater than the width.

You might want to run a couple of diagonal braces across the back before going further...just a piece of mind type of insurance if nothing else.

Looks good!

ya i didn' think about that. However, i did jump on it a bunch to test its strength. its only going to be a 40gal. Its for a discus grow out tank. The benefit of having it so high is that the juvis will not be hovered over. that is one of the things jack wattley (world known breeder) says that juvis hate. The current tank they are in is about stomach level for me. This height keeps everyone at shoulder and head level for most people. 40gal is not a large tank at all, so im not sure if the diagonal bracing is necessary with the large board i have glued and screwed onto the front. (before triming).

IDK, how can i tell if its completely necessary?

GREAT input, i didn't think about it, but now i am.

Since you went taller on your stand, your set up is gonna be top heavy. I have 4 dogs and when they play they run into stuff. Never had any of them knock my tanks over, but have knocked over other stuff. I would maybe look into some how securing the stand to the wall with something, maybe a small bracket.

Easy way to make doors is to cut them about 1/2" to 1" larger than the parameter of the door opening and just trim them with Cap trim. 45 the corners well and you're good to go.

TAKE A LOOK AT MINE HERE

This is all that I did with the doors.

I definitely look at your link!!

For right now this stand is going right into a corner. Not sure if i can attach it because its an apt... Its also going into a part of the apt that you can't really walk through, like a dead end.

Keep the input coming, thanks for all of it.

lol, now that I read your reply, I don't know if it actually is necessary!

Two $2 studs is all that it will take though, so maybe it's worth it for future peace of mind. If you cut one board so it fits in between the top right back post and bottom left back post, then cut the other one so it sits opposite (forming an "X"), you will be able to park your car on top of it and not worry :) Of course, you will have to cut the second board to splice where the two cross. The nice thing is the bracing won't take up any of your interior room since it will sit inside the existing frame work. Be sure to fasten each ends of the X into the mating boards and into the back sheet.

Nice job Sir...it's going to look great when you're done! I hope to see a photo of the complete set-up when you get there :)

My stand for my 110 is really tall, the top of the tank is at 6' 5" perfect for standing viewing and its a 110 tall to begin with, 30 inches(2.5 feet) of that is the tank.

I think you'll enjoy how engaging a tall tank can be.
