I was home alone today so I was digging through some old aquarium stuff. You know the "forgotten treasures " spot for all things aquaria. Well I found two uplift tubes to an old under gravel filter I once had. The light bulb clicked in my head. So I gathered all the prices to it, including brand new carbon cartridges for it.. I've never used a sponge filter before but I always wanted to make one but never got around to it. So this is how I did it. The first step was to figure out how tall I wanted the thing, so I measured the height of my water line and subtracted 2 inches or so(I figured if I kept it tall I could add a bigger sponge, or more of them to the same filter later down the line) and cut the tube to my desired length. Step two was going down to the basement and finding a self tapping screw. A longer process then you'd think. Took me about a half hour to find one.. But I used that to cut the holes in the tube. The third step was painting it so it would be less noticeable in the tank. I chose black to match the back glass that's painted. Third step was using an old broken peice of tile as a weighted base to hold it down. I just used silicone to attach the tube to the tile. All that's left to do is find a sponge to use on it. Which I have to go to an lfs to find. (Any recomended sponges?). I also have to wait for the silicone to cure before I test it out. I have the choice to power it via air or power head. I'd just have to take the top peice off to attach the power head. Let me know what you guys think of this one
