So Im new here and have been working on this tank I got from a friend about a year ago. It is a 55 gal. and only came with the tank, some gravel and a few ornaments. Anyway with the exception of more plants and another light it is looking great. I had posted on getting a new fish I was told was a Firemouth and after further investigation found out it was not a firemouth but a jewel cichlid. I was upset because I wanted to steer away from African and move on to CA/SA for a change. I decided to keep him and also got a Firemouth and am pleased with them both. The Jewel is definitely more aggressive. Today I added 10 guppy fry to the tank and both the firemouth and Jewel are bolting around the tank after the fry, with not much success. There still small, about 2 1/2" so Im sure they will perfect there hunting skills in time. I will post some pics as I get them. I also want to know if anyone has kept these two species together and anything I can do personally to ensure they can tolerate each other. There are quite a few hiding places and I tried to be mindful of line of sight to cut down on seeing each other. For now thats fine but when there full grown I think it could be more of an issue. Any info would be awesome. Thanks

Welcome to MFK, from this point on you must post pics:) it's a rule:grinno:

I myself have never kept Jewels, but many people do keep with SA/CA cichlids. They will each establish a territory and should be fine together. To help with aggression you could get some target fish such as giant danios.

There not alone in the tank by any means. I have been breeding guppies for roughly 8 months starting with 3 1 day old fry and now have about 50ish in the 55 as well. The sole purpose was as feeders. The guppies dont go near either the Firemouth or Jewel and if one does it gets chased away pronto. All the fry I just put in are now gone or hiding very well. Im going to have to look up the target fish as Ive never had any and will be a consideration. Thanks...oh and I will post some pics asap.

looking forward to the pics, also if you wanna see soem guppies getting munched put something like and oscar or a jag in there althoguh you shouldnt really cuz oscar needs 75gal on its own:S although not to sure about the jag.
