ok so my dad dumped 20 feeder goldfish water and all into my 125 without me there. the fish ate a few and I took the rest out. so awile after that my water stunk and got kinda dirty fast. all the other fish were doing ok but my jag was not. he was resting on the gravel a lot and became skittish. I thought it was a combination of my water being too hot for too long(82f) and the nasty sick goldfish. so I did a 50% WC then I added a little bit of aquarium salt and lowered temps to 76(too fast big mistake). now my fish have a minor case of ick so I put the temps back up but they are still moving up gradually cuz its cold in my house a lot. so at this point my Cuban looks a little stressed and my jag lays at the bottom most of the time and if he moves its because he got spooked by my presence. he has been running into heater/filter intakes and everything else he banged into the glass and splash so much water I thought he was gonna die. his eyes have some ick on them so I would assume that's whats bothering him. this is pissing me off I HATE when stupid things like this go wrong. SIDENOTE: this happened over a few days time not all at once it just progressed. WHAT SHOULD I DO???

Keep temp high(around 85), add salt, and 1/3 water changes every other day, and use airstone to increase O2 to the water to offset high temp. May want to keep tank's light off to possibly lessen the stress to the fish and keep them calmer. GL

I'd take the carbon out of your filter and treat for the ick. Water changes every other day. This is a major issue with feeder fish- they tend to be dirty and carry disease because they are poorly cared for. I always had a small (20 gallon quarantine tank for feeders), but after the first 5yrs of fish ownership I stopped using them because they really aren't that great of a food compared to the alternatives. Anyways good luck.

Great advice. I have twice cured ich using 86-88 degrees for 10-14 days. No meds needed, but use airstones to keep oxygen levels up.

Feeder fish are not worth the risk. Modern fish foods contain everything they need. I learned my lesson years ago and try to pass it on. Some old school methods are better left in the past.

Good luck!

I never use meds for ich. Heat (85+) and salt at the dosage listed in the Disease forum for seven full days, doing a 50% water change daily and replacing the salt when I add the new water. Then after the treatment is done I leave the heat elevated for an additional seven days just to make sure it's gone. Then you can gradually bump it down.

The feeders brought in the ich. In cold weather it runs rampant at LFS and wholesalers. I QT every new fish I get, but especially so in the winter months. Feeders are bad for your fish anyway, so I'd suggest avoiding them and explaining to your dad why dumping stuff into a tank is a bad idea.
