my tank is getting quite boring (125 gal) . my jag is 7 inches all he does is hang out by this piece of driftwood and lurk in tht area slowly. my male Dempsey....well hes a Dempsey you know how they are (skittish) and my mayan is acting weird lately basically acting like my jag. theyre all 6-7 inches in size. I also have a 5 inch firemouth who is badass mean as hell. but besides that idk. I have a 20 growout tank with a 3.5 inch Cuban who I plan to put in my 125 with the gang. what could I expect out of this Cuban when he goes in the 125. is he gonna be an openwater/active swimmer? im also thinking about getting an amphilophis saggitae (I think I spelt that right lol!) I heard they are open water predators in the wild and don't hang out too much by ornaments . what do you guys think?

I wouldn't add a amp to that tank cause it could turn very nasty once every body hits adulthood. As for lack of open water swimmers it because they are still small and young adult cichlids will hang more in the open. I've never kept Cubans but Amps are all more of a front and center fish but to a have a Cuban, jag and amp with your current stock will not be pretty once everybody is around a foot.

Get a few Chalceus or a Flagtail - they will liven things up.

I know nothing about em but im interested. care to school a fellow fishkeeper on em

I've only had syns, mutts, and black belts. Black belts have a reputation for being killers which isn't completely undeserved syns ime are mellow and get along well with the parachromis I've kept.but their are plenty of available species just have to look at them and decide which one catches your eye.ImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1376007900.441169.jpg
Kind of a outdated and not very correct listing but here are some of them. The term vieja for the group overall is actually out of date but I haven't had a chance to reeducate myself as to the correct terminology.

Add 3 Sd.about 4 inch size or larger. Or other kinds of large growing barbs:filaments, yellow, T-barbs

if i was you I would get rid of all the decorations because if you dont give them a place to own they will be less agresishon towards each other and the Cuban cichlids that you plan to put all together will beat each other up when they get larger, and most important thing is to get divet fish such as red hooks,Silver Dollars black bar ones if possible wide or narrow bar look really cool in a school of six or more. Or Swanfelde barbs if you can get them, even a school of yellow barbs, The flagtails do not do well in groups, One will grow faster and nicer then a group, that chase each other. And with all the large fish you will have the tank will stay cleaner with Just gravel or what ever you choose
