so my tank is leaking somehow. havent discovered the origin but i have an idea and think it was my fault. The only thing ive really done recently was i placed a new background on the back of the tank, however the leak seems to be in the front .. or underneath and is somehow leaking out under to the front. Anyways first time i put on one of these self sticking backgrounds .. when i was lining it up to cut it. i taped the background to the top and one side. the cut the excess off the other side and the bottom. But .. when cutting the bottom. the easiest way i could see was to use a pocket knife and cut minorlyyy down into the gap between the plastic the glass of the tank on the bottom where there is a little seperation. I assumed the tank was like my small ten gallon where the plastic rims were useless and more for looks as with that tank u can just take it off and still fill it with water. ANYwayss. thats the only thing i can think of having happened .. and that small gap between the plastic and glass is filled with water now but i don't see any of it actually comming out and going over the plastic. really confused. any ideas???

could be from the slice. You'll want to isolate the leak and seal it for sure.

so what exactly did i slice into that could create a leak there? and ive never sealed or repaired or anything before so how to go about doing everything woould be great

If you run HOB filters check them, I completely tore down a tank at like 2am once because I thought it was leaking. Only to find out later when another tank started *leaking* that it wasn't the tank at all. It was the stupid HOB filter, the media was clogged enough that water was just trickling over the edge. Usually it spills back in via the inlet area but I guess that isn't always the case. Worth a check if you do run HOB filters.

are you sure you just didnt have water run down the back of the tank when you were putting on the background? if you did, it would collect at that point on the bottom back of the tank. you would have to slice pretty hard to cut all the way through the seam that easily.

:iagree:

Its probably not a leak. I resealed my 90 needlessly because it didn't click in that I had actually spilled water into the seam during filling. Talk about a waste of $20 and 8 hours of my time.

I've resealed 4 tanks so far and its not a fun job. If the water isn't spilling out of the plastic around the bottom I'd put money on it that its not a leak. Take a blow dryer and blow it into the crack for a few hours. Evaporate the water and wait. If it keeps on filling up then its time to reseal. But until you've confirmed that it is or isn't a leak I wouldn't bother resealing.

EDIT:

Also if your using a HOB filter make sure it isn't dripping down the back of the tank.

for starters. it is deffinatly leaking hte tank somehow .. lost an inch over the past day and a half. so it's not just dribbled in the space there. the filter thing would make sence .. and weird because my filter actually did start dripping yesterday when i replaced it but i was in a rush and never fixed it. however after watching it earlier. its still dripping. but doesnt seem like the drip is fast enough to gain the amount of water that came plus it'd have to go under my tank from the back to the front .. however what does HOB stand for?

HOB = Hang on Back filter.

And if it is dripping that is likely your problem. You'd be surprised how fast it will accumulate even with a small drip.

Indeed. Give this "drip calculator" a try. :D
