I've been following this site for a while and just trying to learn as much as I could. I didn't have the ability until recently to be able to really get into this hobby (habit?). I've been slowly trying to get everything together since November. I finally picked up the 3 big things I needed to really get this project off the ground.
When I was visiting my uncle in Dallas, I found this little guy for $100. It was already pre-drilled for a sump and it's 1/2" glass. It's outside measurements are 60"L x 18"D x 18"T. The guy I bought it from told me it was 100 gallon, but I checked the measurements at 84. So, with 1/2" glass, that would make it around 75, right?
I spent about $120 on supplies and wood for the stand. I wound up with a lot of extra wood.
I went to visit my parents and borrow my fathers radial arm saw to cut the legs exactly the same length. While I was there, my brothers and I decided to go check out one of the local fish stores there. We wound up walking away with this sump, which I stole for $20, and a couple of fish.
I didn't quite have everything to run a tank yet, but I saw this guy for $15 and figured it would be a good way to get the ol' lady hooked on this and hopefully convince her to let me get a raise for this project. She named him Fabio. I spent about another 25 or 30 on a 10g tank and some other things to get a tank set up.
spent about 45 minutes total trying to clean the sump.. came out pretty good so far, I think.
I haven't quite decided how I'm going to do the sump. I do plan on running a Mag-5 and 2 or 3 filter socks with . I also have a few ideas on how I want to run the overflow into the sump. I've also been thinking about running an algae scrubber. I am very open to ideas and criticism. Let me know what you guys think.
