hi guys,

I've got a question for you. But first I'll introduce myself. I am Lars, I live in the Netherlands and i got an newly started tank (100x40x45high). I have been reading this forum for almost a year now, and I have finally made the step to start keeping SH myself.

I am planning on keeping a group of Bleheri's or Orientalis in my tank (depending on availability). I am aware of the keeping conditions on these fish. But I'm still in doubt about how many I will place in my tank. As I said, it measures 100x40x45cm. The SH's will be the only inhabitants.

Here's a picture of my tank..

It is only planted for a week, so the plants will grow larger in time. Surface coverace will be provided by Crypt. Balansae and the fern in the left corner. I will also place some camouflaged PVC piping for cover.

So, how many Bleheri/Orientalis for this tank?

If you guys got any questions on me or my tank, please ask. And I am looking forward to your advice!

ps. I apologize in advance for my English.

Nice tank! Welcome to MFK!

The background is styrofoam right? It looks very very nice!

go for some bleheri`s they wold lok great in that tank id say you could have 6 in there you could end up with a breeding pair but they can be difficult

Thanks for your posts guys!

i would suggest a group of 6 to 8 , as you most likely allready know you will have to eventually move fish out as a pair forms if you wish to breed and keep any fry though .

Hi Tropeus,
I really appreciate your advice since oyu seem to have a lot of experience. I was in doubt if 5 would be to many for this tank, apparently not :P.

The background is actually hollow! It is made out of some kind of epoxy. It is handmade (not by me) and I'm very pleased with it :).

Yeah, still in doubt about bleheri. That would mean i'd have to change my temprature I guess (tropeus, help?) ? I don't know if my plants will like that. And I'm also not sure if the bleheri is available here.

Thanks again guys, and I'll try to keep you updated!

Beautiful tank!

!

hi mate 5 would defanatly work fine , the only reason for more is to allow for a bigger male femal mix in the hope that 2 bond and pair up , this is very possable with 5 , but i have bought a group of 5 before and all being males , this is very rare however and 9/10 you would get a pair out of 5 fish , i genrally go for 6 fish to start out , this also allows for any mysterious death / jumping / loss from fighting ect . if they pair up you would need to move on the other fish and just leave the pair . but when they spawn you would whitness the true beuty of these fish , there parental care and raising of young ect . the young can stay with parents a long time also , so the tank will allways be entertaining.

i would go with 6 rainbows or 8 orientalis

it really depend if you want a tropical tank or a unheated tank , orientalis are very nice fish but bleheri is a contender for best looking channa ( you do have to look around though as you can get fairly standard looking ones and exceptional looking ones , the best ones have bright blue and even green in the flanks and bright red eyes. however even a standard looking one is an very pretty fish

good luck with whatever you go with

cheers col

thanks for your advice again guys!

Its gonna be orientalis for me. Mostly becouse I can get these fish now, and I dont know how Ill have to wait for Bleheri. The LFS says they're not gonna be able to get them for some time. I think my plants will prefer this fish to, since I can now keep the temprature up :).

I am gonna take at least 6 of them. Tomorrow at the LFS (when Im gonna pick them up :nilly: ) I might get 2 extra.

Ill try to get you some pictures tomorrow/thedayafter/thisweek.

see ya!
