why do you want to know?
So. Ive had my tank...... I dont know, two or three years now, and I always thought it was a 55g. As I was looking around the MFK forums, I found a thread on 40g breeder tanks. Turns out I actually have a 40g. Its dimensions are about 36x15x17. IDK why this upsets me since im saving money for a bigger tank anyway and 40g is plenty big enough for now. Just wanted to get this out of my system.

Just out of curiosity, for the last couple of years how did you not notice a difference between your tank and the 55s in the stores.

40 breeders have better footprints anyways :P

Don't worry, I think in the old days these '40B' were labeled as 45 breeders and I had 3 of them... now to find of they were 40s. I feel a little cheated (like you).

The 36x18 footprint are kind of odd tanks:

40g 36x18x16
50g 36x18x19
65g 36x18x24

I could easily see the confusion if the person thought he had the 50g compared to the 40g; but the 40g compared to a 48x13 55g are quite different.

my 45 gallon is a 3' footprint too ;p

I like that 40B footprint better anyways, 12-13" wide is not as forgiving as the wider 40, when it comes to stocking.

I thought getting a 90 was cool...Until I ran the numbers with actual water volume...Closer to 75g (like 78.? with 1-2" of water from the top) and still only 18" wide. :( I want my arow!

My LFS usually only houses fish in tank that are around 10-20g, except for in the backroom where they keep the bigger fish, but those are in 100g tanks or somethin.
Also I have come to like the 40b better becaus it is deeper than most 55g ive seen
