my digital thermometer says the water is 84 degrees. my heater is on 77 . i have my tank in the basement but im not sure why the water would be so hot.i hav a jag, dempsey, mayan and cuban. is this bad? does anybody else experience this problem? and will my fish be good?

I've had heaters do this to me before I'm not sure the cause but heaters can malfunction and heat too much 84 is a little high but not lethal. It could also just be the knob is a little off but if u can't get it to come down I would replace it

What's the air temperture in your basement? Heaters can only heat water not cool it. If the air tempeture is over 77 it will eventually raise the tempeture in your tank. If this isn't the case maybe you thermostat is broken on the heater. Un plug it and see if the tempeture drops.

its a 125 gallon with ,two fluval 306 filters, regular lighting that came with the tank from the store. im guessing flurescent lighting. my friend in miami just got a tank and before he even bought a heater his temp read 80 hes in miami but miami is no hotter than new york right now.

I turn off all my heaters during the summer months. I live in California so it remains fairly warm. Idk how the temp is in New York at the moment but being that its summer if recommend turning of the heater if your temp remains fairly warm and constant

Unplug your heater. If the temp drops you know you've got a faulty heater, and if it doesn't you can try to narrow down other causes of excessive heat such as pump motors. Process of elimination.

They should be fine for a while as you try and figure it out. Last summer my heater malfunctioned and my tank went up to 95; not sure how but all of my fish survived

I'm in pa near Philly and my tank is sitting at 83.7 right now. Tank light is off and I have no heaters as I don't need them. My tank stays 80-85 degrees all year round (I have a wood stove on the other side of the room, for winter that i use as my only heat source in winter) my tank is downstairs in the family room. I have oscars and never had a problem with having the temp that high. Just make sure you have enough water agitation for oxygen. My tank is 180 gallon
