My Thorichthys Aureus tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just a little update trying to snap some pictures, realizing my glass is too dirty. But I wanted to show abit of the color difference between the individuals, some are showing a real strong gold, where I can definitely see where their name comes from. And some are ligther with brighter spots. Again I’m pleased I decided to go this way with this tank.

One has significantly outgrown the others, he isn’t the most colorful. But he is easily twice the size of everyone else.

These two aren’t the best pictures, but I feel it really shows how some are much more gold then others. And some the blue is the strong spots.

Looks fantastic! Working on setting up my 125g as a Meeki/Aureus tank.

Nice! These guys are in a 120, 5ft. If I could ever find some Helleri I’d be sorely tempted to keep a group of them with these. But I’ve yet to see those for sale. And honestly I’m happy with the species only attitude I get. It will be really interesting when their alittle bigger and start to mature.

I’ve only seen helleri for sale one time w/ Jeff Rapps. Never anywhere else.

Your aureus are looking great!

Thanks! And yeah since before I got my Aureus I was looking for Helleri, but none to be found! Are Thorichyths Aureus sexually dimorphic? Can you tell their sex? Or are they one of those, wait till they pair and see type. Lol

Not sure on sexing aureus. Some thorichthys species are easy and some not.

Yeah, there isn’t a whole lot of information about Aureus out there. Least not that I found. Even finding pictures of them was hard and iffy. Some pictures labeled Aureus where not in fact them, and some where, then there was the whole blue\gold difference. And then finally some amazing adult specimens I found pictures of.

It seems like they’ve been coming Out of the woodwork now though I’m starting to find a few videos of them, and a few pictures. But still not a whole lot. That’s part of the reason I want to photograph them through all their stages. If not simply because I enjoy doing it.

If you ever see them sold as “reds”, they are most likely maculipinnis. Blue and gold are the two main morphs.
I am glad you are keeping this updated w/ photos. They are an amazing species that doesn’t get much attention.
