My Thorichthys Aureus tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Looking good.
You can see those aureaus are going to be stunning. A mature male aureaus with fins erect with long trailers really is a sight to see.
Your patience in finding some quality aureaus will be well rewarded.
The scape is looking nice and as the plants mature will work well providing retreats and areas of resting for females that may not be ready to spawn.
Personally I would not add a pleco for 2 reasons. First of all it would spoil an otherwise geographically correct mix of species. Some pleco will also graze on algea that would provide a food source for your livebearers.
I also think they may munch on your cichlids eggs at night, should they breed.
Tank looks really nice and I think the stock will work great as it is.
Look forward to updates.

Thanks Stanzzzz7 Stanzzzz7 I think I agree on the pleco, the con’s outweigh the pro’s in this particular case. I’m glad I waited and didn’t get the aquabid or petplace Aureus, just too many questions and the pictures next to them where very lacking. I think wetspot came through with a nice batch and I’m glad I waited for it.

Hello everyone, I’m sure your tired of reading about the changes to this tank. Let me assure you That this is the last time in a long time the stock will change. Both my Jaguar and Umbee are now in their bigger homes, and I was left with this 120 and no idea what I wanted to do.

I jumped around from one idea to the next and what I finally came to was I wanted a Thorichthys tank. So after a while of searching I finally found some Juvinile T. Aureus at Wetspot and jumped right away to pull the trigger. This tank is a work in progress and as I scape it and the stock grows I will update periodically. If for no other reason then that I am excited to keep this species.

My initial group consists of 15 juvinile T. Aureus along with 5 swordtails. We shall see how this stock works and adjust accordingly. So far I’m throughly enjoying these little guys.

The tank and scape thus far;

P.s these are Thorichthys Aureus (gold) not Thorichthys Aureus (blue flash) to be honest I haven’t figured out the difference. So if some one could chime in that would be cool.

I've been trying to find out the difference between the blue and gold morphs as well but have had no luck. I saw a pic posted by Rusty Wessel of a "Gold aureum" that looked just like pics of blue flash that I've seen.

I also got a group of Wetspot's gold aureum and they're growing out right now in a 55. I have 5 of them now...lost a few of the smaller ones along the way but I think I have 2 males and 3 females. Largest is pushing 4". They're in a very dimly lit tank so I haven't really taken any pics or videos of them yet. Might try to do that soon.

I've noticed lately that someone in Florida is selling "Blue flash" on aquabid. I've been considering getting a group and growing them up in a separate tank to see how they differ from the golds as they grow. I just don't know if I want to dedicate 2 of my 4 tanks to the same species.

I really like them a lot...I also got a group of T. maculipinnis that's in my 125 community

I looked around a lot before I got these guys, I saw a few different names for them. “Red flash” was an interesting one, however I read reviews online that that was simply another name for T.
maculipinnis.

I found a couple pictures online of “blue flash” and they had beautiful blue spotting down the side. However, when my Aureus gill flare at each other blue spots appeare all down their bodies that you can’t see when their just swimming around. So I’ve been wondering if that picture was simply a normal Areus that was fired up for some reason, possibly breeding dress. I’m not sure.

I’ll have to check on aquabid I’m curious if they actually are blue flash. I’d really like to know the difference. How’s your maculipinnis on aggression? I almost got a group of them instead but I was worried about inter tank aggression.
