My Thorichthys Aureus tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I thought so, because I thought about getting them, but decided on buying pasionis instead. The Wet Spot is one of my favorite places to buy fish these days. I bought 6 pasionis and 2 robertsoni from them. All fish came in very healthy, healthier then anywhere else. Only lost 1 pasionis after having them in 2 years.

Out of the 15 I recived, I lost 3 in the very beginning within the first month or two. But since then everyone seems to be thriving. They eat great, and everyone seems to be growing so I can’t complain at all.

Just saw “red aureum” for sale and the pic is definitely maculipinnis. Another just labeled “aureus” but a pic had a maculipinnis. Definitely seems like people try to sell nice looking maculipinnis as aureus. Don’t get it, because maculipinnis is just as nice. Both are some of the most colorful thorichthys species.

Yeah, seems to be common. And I agree I don’t know why, maculipinnis is a beautiful species.
I was very close to having Them instead of Aureus when I just couldn’t find any.

Plus, like I said before. When I was looking, I couldn’t find any pictures of juvenile Aureus to save my life. The only pictures I could find where adolescents and adults. And I’m still not convinced that they all where actually Aureus lol.
I do wish I could have found some Blue flash, so I could see the difference between gold and blue.

Info/pics are really hard to find on aureus. They are rare in the hobby where maculipinnis is almost as common as meeki. Probably can find a lot more on them.
I like both morphs of aureus, it would be tough choosing for me. I have always thought it would be cool to have two morphs, separate tanks, and species only. It would be cool to compare the differences as they grow into adults. This is something I want to do when I have more space.

Just a little update, more reds are coming through along with more blue speckles when they turn their tail in the light. My lilypads choked out most my other plants so I’m going to have to redo the plants pretty soon here. Please excuse the floating debris I just did a water change and filter sock wash so lots of floating particles. Here’s a few pics.

Looking good, they are getting to the age where their colours will really pop.
Great set up.

Thanks guys! I love these guys, their color is definitely coming in, lots of reds and golds depending on their moods. They like to chase and flair their gills to show off their colors but actually I don’t think there is a torn fin in the bunch. Definitely a fun tank to watch.

They are looking great. How long have you had them and how much would you say they have grown in that time? Out of my five I have one that is about 50% larger than the next largest, but they are still quite a bit smaller than yours. The colors are really starting to show nicely, especially on the largest.

Here is a pic of the smaller ones. Excuse the photo-bombing swordtails.
