As a kid I always wondered how a coffee pot makes the water get from the holding tank to the the filter. I found out that basicly the heating of the water in the tube allowed it to rise above the holding tank and drip down.

So today bored I was thinking If you could make some like this on a larger scale. You could in a power outage turn this bad boy on, heating it with open flame or what ever. The water would flow over the top of the tank at a very slow rate causing agitation, and adding heated water.

My though is if the flow rate is slow enough the tank would not super heat, but you would still need to keep an eye on the temp, and you would get continuous agitation.

I am not 100% serious I am sure this is pretty silly and dumb, but hey I was bored.

ROFL!! Fish flavored coffee!!

But seriously, not very practical or useful.

maybe, it would have to be such a small amount to not impact the tanks temp. i think your better off buying some kind of power source like a generator.

so you plan to use your electric coffee pot to heat the tank when the power goes out.....

sounds flawless to me....

if you are talking about the old style coffee pots tht you put on the stove... then your idea is also flawless once you figure out how to get the gas stove into the tank...

Hehe someone has never been camping with a propane stove. As for the electric coffee pot I thought he pretty much had already rules that out with his mention of "open flame". Cause if your electric coffee pot is causing open flames it is time for a new coffee maker.

As for the idea though I dont think it is practical just to agitate the water. I keep a few battery air pumps around for my freshwater tanks and for my marine tank I do have a very small generator that I can use to power the heaters and pumps.

I figured it was dumb, I get selly ideas around 2:00 am when I am bored stiff sitting in front of my work computer waiting for someone to come in for help. maybe its the Pots of coffee I drink

I don't think its dumb. It adds heat and agitation to a tank in case of a power outage, which are both necessities. I just don't think there is a very practical way of doing that along the lines of a "coffee-pot" heating system. You could prove us all wrong and come up with a prototype that works (or even more fun to watch, one that doesn't ;)).

While I love to watch people including myself mess something up, I don't like to hurt my fish.

But I might play around in my 20Gallon.
