This is my first TSN ive owned and have him/her housed in a fully planted 75g. This fish is not only really awesome looking fish but the second day I had him he is already eating out of my hand. Its about 5 inches long and it gets fed once a day a 2" goldfish.
Beefheart, or even cichlid pellets will work. You can still give him feeders, but only as a treat. Otherwise he may become rather picky and then wont take anything but live food.
dont use beef heart often -not great for tank or digestion
occasional minced beef
prawns
muscles
white bait or lancefish
if your feeding from the hand theres not much point in live food.
I'd try and get him on Market Shrimp. From the local market. It's easy and cheap. You can buy them in big bags frozen. I swear by the stuff. Either way cool looking fish!!
Look into the sinking carnivore pellets by Hikari. They're are a great size for the tiny baby. My guys took pretty quickly to pellets. While I was transitioning him, he ate defrosted krill and blood worms and live red wrigglers (small earthworms). Now he eats massivore, sinking cichilid gold, algae wafers, sinking wafers, and random servings of de-shelled 'cocktail' shrimp, earthworms, and tilapia. My guys were 3.5" in August 2008 and now they're between 20-26" and growing like crazy.
