My turtle is eating his landing dock? WTF? Is he a goner?

I have two little red eared sliders..... the live together in a 20 long aquarium with some river pebbles on the bottom, a submersible filter, and a Zoo-Med "turtle dock" that can be found at any pet store.

This morning I noticed the larger turtle was eating the dock...he has already eaten a couple square inches of the thing!!! I'm gonna take it out, but is my turtle screwed??? He ate a good amount of plastic and foam.

GEEZ, I feed these guys twice a day!!!

Is it possible that they are lacking something in their diet? How varied is your turtles diet?

its a clever marketing ploy, make it edible and irresistable to the turtles, and then you have to buy more docks. :D

gr8karma might be right, but then they might just be doing it as something to do if its the only thing floating around. Just inquistive maybe...

I don't know....I give them exoterra and zoo-med aquatic turtle food, krill and some feeder fish sometimes.

He just ate when I fed them so I guess he is still O.K. I'm just worried he's gonna need some serious turtle ex-lax...

A while back, my turtles started eating the small turtle dock. Same thing for the medium one. (No ill effects noted.)

I had a large turtle dock in a 150 (not right now because most of them are too big to sit on it without sinking it) but they never took a bite out of that one.
Have no idea why, other than it might be too big for their mouths.

Just a thought: Make sure you provide calcium for them to eat. Perhaps that's what their trying to add to their diet. I supply cuttlebone and they seem to know they need it.
 
haha turtles arent very intelligent animals.
i had some box turtles that would eat the newspaper tht they would lay waste upon.
