I didnt know that but never saw a single one. Every turtle you can think of which is native I have seen and lots of them esp during summer (babies) but not 1 spotted ever .
Yeah, I've always had a thing for unusual herp species.

Great turtles I must say I love those spotted turtles. Few here keep them.
Kept like a slider, do they bask the same or mostly aquatic ? I Have only seen them on MFK site or pics. Not a turtle you see for sale in even good reptile pet stores.
Like Eric mention, this species is bred in reasonable numbers in Florida in particular and a couple other states are starting to increase their own numbers as well. They still aren't a species you would see in most pet shops but you can find them from breeders here in FL without a lot of difficulty. They are a great species, however.
@Chris: Very nice turtles and well dimensioned enclosures. All of your turtles get very big, I hope you have the room to keep them if they are grown up ;-)
@handFriedShrimp: A big waterland tub is definitely too small for the species. They get VERY agressive as they mature, especially males. I know at least three keepers who had to separate males because they tried to hump everything that got in their way. If the partner didn't like to, they bit them and bullied them until all turtles except the dominant male left the water. The Vienna Vivarium keeps a trio in a 5000+ litre tank and they always have bite marks from the others.
Absolutley OWESAME turtles and setups The spoteds are defenetly my favorite, so good to know that a increasing group of people are sucsseding in keeping and breeding them.

Oh here in Europe it is not a big problem. Many keepers in Spain, Germany, Austria and Italy have them and if they start breeding, they reproduce in good numbers. It's more a problem to get good homes for the hatchlings.

Serious?! They are defently on my list to get some day, Ive seen some avaible like 2000euro each. Unfornatly Im not shure if it is already possible here to have cites 1 animals privatly even if cb and fully documented, anyways even if I could I dont have the kind of space they need yet. Question for you: are there many people working with black marsh turtles? I would love to get a few.
For true cb specimens you can get CITES easily. In some countries the papers are free, but in Austria they charge you 15€ per document :-/
Adults are expensive, but I think you can get hatchlings for under 500€. I must admit, that I haven't seen some for sale for a while. I think the webmaster of www.breedingturtles.com has bred them a while back.
Siebenrockiellas are a little more difficult to get. They are not really imported into the EU and unfortunately there are not many established breeding groups. Two friends of mine bought some hatchlings at the Hamm show from a German breeder for a reasonable price. Obviously, he has got quite a number of adults which are in good condition. Besides that, breeding successes are rare. I have heard that the Prague Zoo had some hatchlings in the past few years, but of course they are not meant to be sold.
