I agree that he should color up with time. My guy was very similar in coloring to yours for the longest time. He is just now(at 7"+) starting to be more colorful. Your female is pretty!
He is with the female in a fully stocked 240.

If he is 6.5" I would say that is his mature colors or close to it, does he color up more when they are getting ready to spawn? If you over estimated his size I think there is a better chance of him coloring up more. Also if he is stressed that may be keeping his color from popping more. Did you get them from COA?
He was 2" smaller than the female when I put her in with him two months ago. Now he has caught up to her in length, but not girth.
There is not alot of stress in the tank. She will sometime chase him away.

My male started getting pretty good color around the 3"-4" range. I think his color has gotten even better in the past week, he is around 6". I don't expect his color to change much more though.
