ok, so i just got her a couple of hours ago. shes still prob adjusting. but tell me what you think. what kind of FH is she? does she have potential? she prob about 5-6 inches and 7-8months. the breeder was selling it for $100, but paid $70 (alot of convincing..long story). she is by herself in a 30gal tank. and im not feeding her yet. (when should i start feeding her?) im prob gonna decorate the tank in the next couple of days.

well, anyway, tell me what you think. im kinda new to the whole FH thing. what should i feed her? when can i breed her? what kinda of male should i breed with her? is she even good enough to breed in the first place? just anything i need to know, ANYTHING!! talk to me in "normal" english hehe, i dont know any fancy fish expert lingo!lol thanks for all the opinions in advance

PS im also new to this site, just came across it, and i think im gonna be here alot!

cheers

That's a very promising looking FH!

I would start feeding as soon as it looks like it's settled in. Feed a variety of everything. Cichlid pellets should be the main diet IMO.

Change the water often, and get ready to move it to a bigger tank:D

Welcome to MFK

thanks rallysman! so how long can i possibly keep her in her 30gal tank till i get a new bigger one? how big exactly? (the smallest possible, since shes only a female and wont grow as big..i think) since i also got the tank, i have to save up first to get a new tank....(i need a job, i think i got in a really expensive hobby haha)

You got in a very expensive hobby, and by joining this site it only got more expensive. You'll see;)

You'll be fine for quite a while if you keep up on water changes and filtration. Just know now that a 55 or more will be needed in the future.

first, welcome to the crazy world of flowerhorns.

its relatively an expensive hobby but is very rewarding indeed.

you cant expect too much with female FHs but i would say what you got is ok. i must however say that here in our country and by our local standards, thats an expensive fish. the bucks you paid for that fish could give you a much better fish if you buy from here - which is actually half a world away. hehehe

you may not feed her for a day or two. the fish may still be stressed and may not feed well for now. i suggest you try giving a few pellets after a day and observe. if the fish does not eat after a few minutes, remove the fish food right away to avoid spoiling the water. reattempt feeding her the next day.

you may start breeding her as soon as it becomes comfortable with her tank. you can pair her with any male ZZ since male kamfas are sterile. before you think of breeding however, i suggest you read up on breeding techniques and experiences of other people. FH breeding is not a joke since you need a lot of resources, time, patience and effort to be successful at it. you would need at least a 50 gals tank if you need to breed her. after the eggs are hatched, you need a several smaller tanks (10 - 30 gals) as grow out tanks. better read a lot before you even consider breeding. you got a lot of info online.

with regards to food choices, there are a lot of fish food in the market. since you are planning to breed her, go for high protein cichlid foods. you may also give her raw shrimps.

again, good luck!

cool, thanks alot silvergrayhair. actually, my first plan was to get a fish from asia (since the fish got popular back there first) but had no idea on how, how much, who to look for, etc. so i had to rely on my ever dearest friend craig to find me a reasonable offer. since i really dont know where to look, i took the first add i saw on craig.

soooo, here she is. dont get me wrong, im no dumb socal guy who wouldnt read or learn about things first. i use to have tropical fish, and a FH too, but never had it that long cause we had to move so im sorda, but not really starting over and learning things all over again.

im not really planning on breeding, im just playing it by year. i want to let her grow to her fullest potential then il take it from there.

and i was wondering what particular brand/name/kind of food should i feed my fish to enhance her color, shape/size, over all appearance?? (cause theres so much food out there, its overwhelming) more info on how to take care of my little devil.

what makes flowerhorns so interesting is there is no guaranteed formula even between the same brrod. what may work in one fish may not work for another. there are just a lot of factors which determine how the fish develops.

try to apply all recommended fishfoods and techniques and maintain your fish on which makes her develop properly.

if that is really a female, i think its already mature and may not develop some more. you cant do much on the kok and body but you may still enhance the coloration
