Not sure what's going on with some of my fish. Both of my vieja bifa and a texas cichlid of mine are turning black? What is causing this? Anyone had this happen to them before?
Temp: 85
Ph: 7.9
Ammonia: 0

And I should also mention it's mainly on the underside of their face (beard). The texas actually has it from the bottom of his mouth to his belly.

I can't think of an specific reason other than individuals can change color depending on their mood, age, general health, etc. My blackbelt has gone through several color phases. At times its belly is red, and at other time it is jet black (pics below). At night its body becomes more silvery and the belt more prominent. My V. hartwegi darkens considerably when in an aggressive mood (pics below). It might be that your fish are coming into sexual maturity and trying on their aggressive colors for size. I wouldn't let it concern you if they seem healthy otherwise.

Ok, im gonna drop the temp down to 81-82 Chris. By looking at your pictures FUG, I think maybe there is nothing to worry about. How your dark your blackbelt gets, is as dark as mine gets. Maybe its just me, but id rather worry about them and it be nothing compared to me letting it go and turns out to be something fatal. Thanks guys!
