Nope it killed off so many tank mates... i bought it when it was 1" 2 years ago it was so beautiful now it made itself a nice solo 55g tank... lucky me.
I would pick a buttokoferi out if i could have any cichlid i wanted, such aggression and beauty. unfortunately a 55 gallon is much to small, i think sometime within the year you should get him a 100 gallon, are they slow growers?
no def not slow growers. When i bought my initial group of fish i had plenty of info on all the fish EXCEPT the tilapia but i saw it for like 3 bucks and it was 2".... and beautiful so i figured i would give it a shot. After a year it out grew all my fish except a dempsey and a Jag. Couple of months later it killed them... so yea it out grew all my other cichlids. Its a cool fish but im bored with it, if your by the NYC area you can have him for a real cheap price im about to trade him into a local fish store soon.
Buttikoferi are considered slow growers, your other fish may have grown slower for many different reasons.
But feeding mine a lot and 50% WC's 2x a week and mine isn't growing that fast, its growing faster then my last Butti's but thats because im doubling the WC's and feeding.
