So today I added a Whiptail pleco.

Problem number 1 I was sold this whiptail being told he was a bushy.

He now shares a tank with 6 Tiger Barbs and 4 Convicts.

For some reason the Pleco is finding it hard NOT to want to go in where the spawning Convicts are.

The Tigers get it. Absolutely no trouble. The other Convicts get it.

The only one who hasn't got it ... is this pleco. He swims right in and as soon as the male (who is marginly bigger then him but more bulky) comes in with raised fins.

Does the pleco leave? NO he raises his fins and engages the male.

Do you think this is just introduction issues and this will go away or do you think this could remain a difficult problem.

(Being this isn't my only problem as the whiptail likes maximum water temp around 75 and my tank sits at 80 currently.)

I may just have to accept I have to return the whip tail.

Sounds like your pleco doesnt know the order of the tank and he wants to be king. It might work out over time or you just might end up with some dead fish soon. Plus if you want to keep the tank at 80 you might want to find an alge eater that is more suited for the temp.

plecos can do fine in higher temps, mine does great and he used to think he was the boss of the tank until he spent a week in my sump now he like to share the tank with everyone...

give it some time, I think it will work out.

Thanks ... I hope it does work out. He seems not pestered at the moment and leaving the other tank mates alone. I haven't seen any signs of health issues due to temp the tank is well oxygenated.

:ROFL:I have a baby jag that was being mean to my baby oscars so he got dumped in with the big oscars to learn some manners, he's a good baby jag now.

Do the cons have eggs? Plecos like eating eggs. Thats probably why hes trying to force his way near them. Although, he could just be stubborn and wants to move around the tank how he wants. Soon, he will realize whos the boss by taking a beating once in awhile.

be careful of the species, for me a whiptail is a sturisoma and has long filaments on his tail (ie the whip).

everything in that article DOES NOT apply to sturisoma

they like warmer water (28-30 deg C)

they lay eggs on the side of the tank

they eat algae wafer, insect larvae, vegetables

they are easy to breed (well mine are)

they like a lot of current in the tank - I have 2 airstones on max and 2 strong filters

they need bogwood for digestion

they prefer logs twigs and broad leaved plants - anything where they can streth out, usually quite high in the tank too, mine rarely go on the substrate
