This is an old pic from my cellphone. I have not been able to catch one of these since I made room for it, just hoards of bluegill. Just thought I'd vent a little of my frustration here and share a pic. Anybody know what type of longear it is?

looks like it could be a red breast not a longear

No doubt a redbreast. One of the most enjoyable fish I've ever kept. Though once they hit a certain size, the aggression turns on. Whether kept in a 'large community' by itself or in a sunfish only tank, I would consider them to be the most aggressive sunfish I've ever kept (including greens). You can see the one I had for a long time as my avatar. He successfully killed off everything in the tank once he reach 6 inches, so now he lives out in the pond.

Good to know. I'd be keeping him (if i ever see one again) with 2 bluegill and a pleco. I think one of my gills might be hybridized with these as he has the red eyes, so we'll see how that turns out.

Hey Thalan , your location says your from Jacksonville . If your familiar with the gate parkway area , you can go on gate parkway on the east side of 9a and their is a stream and a lake behind some business buildings . I used to go back their and get crawfish all the time , well iv caught many of those sunfish back their along with lmb , smb and other types of sunfish .

I dont get over to that side of town much. Theres a pond within walking distance of my house where I've caught them before I just cant seem to get any now that I have room for them.

yup its a redbreast! they are definitely aggressive little sunfish! my redbreast is only about 2.5 inches, and it outcompetes my bluegill which is almost 6 inches, and my two pumpkinseeds which are close to 4 and 5 inches. he just eats and eats and eats! i really enjoy watching this fish in particular. i can't wait till it gets bigger and its ear flap starts elongating and it starts getting colored up!
