LOL. you got to do what you can. Nice lung fish BTW.

I hope he does not eat the heater...my Aethiopicus is pretty mellow, so I hope he does not crush it......I always hated these carnisters (I don't know what the hell I was thinking to use them for my lungs) way to small and now this.

I just liked the fact they had this internal heater and you can use them on different water levels....unlike an overflow.....well back to the drawing bord..I have to get them some bigger tanks anyway...

perhaps you could make a specialized wet/dry filter.

i'm sure you'll need some crazy mechanical filtration after seeing your broken down canister LOL.

perhaps some disposible sponges fallowed by multiple filter socks and then onto the bioballs/scrubbies.

I went to the LFS yesterday...and they had some spare stuf for me to borrow. now i hooked up a pump fed bio filter....I'm definetly going to change the whole filtration....this is way to much work....I'm constantly refresching and cleaning out my filters just to keep my water parameters o.k. (and these water tests are also real expencive).

Im tellin you extreme mechanical filtration and a good maitenence schedual on the mechanical filtration media is about the only way you are going to get some good results.

Your best bet will be disposable cheap dollar store sponges to take out the big crap, fallowed by reusable micron bags to get the water nice and clear (probably 400, 200, 100 and 50 micron bags....ya a series of 4 bags should keep the water crystal clear and limit some of the maitenence) This should take all the crap out of the water and allow your bio-media to not get full of it really reducing your work in the end.

Probably rinse sponges and micron bags weekly or bi-weekly at the most and just switch out the sponges when they start getting bad (found them like 15 for $1 at dollar store)

what did you have in mind for your filtration?

x24...I don't want to go all out just yet because this is just a temp setup I think I'll hook up some simple bio +/- 80 gal filters wich are fed by my eheim pro 3's there will be some new and bigger tanks in 2008.... I'm planning to work with kaldness media and biochips and use a sieve...(200 micron)//pondsieve or estrosieve, multiesieve// as a pre filter..followed by j-mats (japanese) than kaldness (moving bed) and end it with these bags you are talking about..here we call them gaf zakken....this is my new filtration planning for 2008...

I just think you would be better suited to build a constant drip as apposed to all that filtration...They are way to messy for all that. That would be super ill top notch stuff for any fish fish though. Just my thoughts on this. You say you feel like you waisted you money once...Keep that filtration and invest in the drip....

my new filtration plan is designed to deal with a lot of mess and crap...the sieve will take out the crap direct out of the water everthing bigger than 100 micron....and in my oppinion this kaldness in combination with this biochip is the best media for bio filtration..(just my oppinion) .I have been reading alot about biofilm and how it builds up and performs and moves ..and I think this kaldness is the answer.
