I noticed a few minutes ago my female yellow lab cichlid has huge bulging gill flaps right way down the bottom of her head and little dots beneath her slightly transparent yellow skin. I shouldn't say transparent but you can kinda make out shapes through close inspection...
Will the eggs be ok with 3 cukoo catfish? The bigggest is 3 inches the other is 2 inches and the third is one inch

They'll be in her bucchal pouch, so I doubt the catfish will get in there. When she releases the fry... that'll be another story.

How long till my yellow labs eggs hatch??? The eggs were laid on Saturday between 8:00-11:59 o'clock. Please don't give me a random day I want the range ex: between 20 and 30 days... the full range... and once they hatch then does she spit them out? Or does she wait several days? Please help :confused::confused:
I thought cukoo catfish only ate eggs should I be worried about the fry with cuckoo catfish too? I have a spare tank that has a 5millimeter long datnoid will they be OK with with him? It would be a 10gal.
Wait, does the female spit out the eggs or does she wait for them to hatch?????? What do YOU feed your Malawi cichlids? Tanganyikan??? HELP!!

i've looked into it and it doesn't really say when they will hatch but this is what i found. "She’ll carry her eggs for about three weeks. She won’t eat or fight much during this gestation period. She withdraws as much as possible from the daily hustle and bustle of every African cichlid community. She mouths and tumbles her eggs to assure proper incubation. During this time the eggs hatch and develop into baby fishes. When she finally releases them, they are perfectly capable of fending for themselves."

The eggs will hatch in the mother's mouth after 3-4 days, but the mother will continue to hold them for as long as there are other predators around (hence the term mouth-brooder).

During this time she will come to the food but won't be able to eat. Sometimes mom might die of starving ... for real.

You should wait until you see her mouth turn really dark (the fry are getting bigger - roughly 2-3 weeks), then either remove her to a small tank all by herself, or use a soft stick (Starbucks coffee stirring stick is best) to pry her mouth open in a shallow container with the tank water to release the babies. Continue to hold her in the water, but do not put her back down, she'll scoop up the babies again in no time. Repeat the process until you have all the babies out.

If she is put in a tank by herself, she will release the babies to eat or when she feels it's safe. When feels threaten, she would scoop the fry back into her mouth again until they are too large to hold.

Yellow Labs are tough. They won't die easily. After the babies spend all their yolk sack, they will eat crushed-flakes.

Good luck.

I stripped my yellow lab at 21 days. If you want her to spit out the fry then you should wait another week.

Good luck
