When did the eggs hatch? The fry will not need feeding until the 3rd day after hatching since they'll feed off their yolk sacs. The 1st feedings should consist of live microworms, live newly-hatched brine shrimp, and live newly hatched daphnia. If these foods haven't been set up already for the fry, there are commercial fry liquid and paste foods available.
Yep, that's exactly what it looks like. Accept mine are completely yellow. They should have hatched day before yesterday. I crushed some flake food into powder and they really went for it. I just thought they would be a little bigger. I've got some breeding projects I'd like you all to comment on. I'm really into the colors yellow and velvety black. I want to acquire these genes and migrate them into other versions of goldfish. I've seen the color yellow in six different varieties of goldfish and the non fading black velvet gene in four varieties. I've just finished the Joseph Smartt's book on goldfish genetics and I'm left with more questions. Smart guy, crappy writer. Since goldfish are tetraploids, should I make any changes to the standard selective reproduction methods? I have a yellow wakin male and a red/white ryukin female ready to make eggs. Hopefully I will get at least a few yellow F1's that I can later breed to each other and with luck they will have a strong resemblance to a ryukin. I'm guessing it will take at least 12 generations to get the full ryukin body form back to an acceptable confirmation. I'm still wondering if I should breed for set standards for the variety or breed toward what I like. (short tails, round bodies, metallic scales, strong, rigid dorsal fin). You know we've been domesticating these fish for upwards of 2000 years and the only thing we know for sure is that they have four sets of chromosomes. Is there more than one kind of expression of yellow? Is it just a orange fish with the red being suppressed by an allele or gene? or four of them in unison?
In addition to wanting to make certain varieties of goldfish unfading velvet black and lemon yellow, Joseph Smartt hypothesized that by breeding the current day goldfish with it's progenitor the Prussian Carp it could lead to the expression of shapes and colors not previously seen. Crossing a goldfish with a carp could increase it's longevity, it's hardiness, it's size and might result in hybrid gigantism. Wouldn't it be cool to have a goldfish the size of a koi! Could I actually achieve these lofty goals or is my head in the clouds? Either way I will have some yellow wakin to share
