I originally bought these as Metynnis fasciatus but I'm pretty sure they are Myleus rubripinnis. When I first got them they were as small as a dime but in just two months have grown to the size of a silver dollar. As they grow the stripes are disapearing as well as they are developing the classic sickle shaped anal fin.
Another note of interest/ These fish are highly territorial. Of the 7 fish, each has staked out its own little territory and guards it quite ferociously from the others. If you'll notice, most have a somewhat tattered anal fin. I had to take these pics after throwing food in the tank as it is the only time they actually hang out without beating on each other.
These first 4 pics are of when I first received them almost 2 months ago.
You can see the stripes and why they might be confused with M. fasciatus.
Here's a set I took just today. You can barely see the stripes anymore and the body shape is definitely M. rubripinnis.
I'm still hoping that as they mature they might end up being one of the more spectacular races of M. rubripinnis such as M. rubripinnis luna.
