Hi all,
So I went out of town this past weekend and had my friend look after the tanks. She just fed, dosed ferts, and checked for any obvious catastrophies. When I cam back, I had snails, an injured yo yo, and a TON of BBA on my drift wood.
The snails went away once I fasted my fish for a day. I fugure the yoyos were just being fed too much to have an appetite for snails.
The yoyo looks like my bichir took a chomp at him. Both of his sides are brused and red by his gills. The shape and placement of the wound suggests "bichir jaw". So I took out my Carbon and dosed the tank with "metaflix"? (the bottle is at home, but I am fairly certain that is what it is called). It is supposed to help promote the healing of wounds. I can't put him in my other tank for healing because 1) it is WAY colder than the one he is in now and 2) I have a mystery snail in there that would get eaten (the snail can't go in the main tank b/c there are yoyos in there, too).
The BBA is mostly on my driftwood, but a little is on the ludwigia, swords, and madicascar lace. I say it is a mystery b/c the CO2 is constant as it is a pressurized CO2 system on a timer to shut on/off. The circulation shouldn't be an issue either. I have a pump (level 1) that creates circulation throughout the whole tank. All plants are gently swaying and there is good surface movement.
I dosed with excel to see if that will clear it up, but I don't wanna push it with the excel b/c I don't know which plants can tolorate high doses of it. A direct dip in 2:1 water to excel solution killed my anubias and swords.
Here is a list of the plants in that aquarium:
Madigascar Lace-2
Ludwigia (red)
Aponogeton Ulvaceus -2
Silvermist Foxtail
Rotala Indica
Melon Swords (red flame and regular)-4
Japanese Rush? -1
Anubias, petite nana -2
Narrow leaf chain sword-4
Java Moss (only a pinch)
Also, whenever my Madigascar gets any algae on its new leaves, the new leaves are "stunted" and don't really grow anymore.
My questions are:
Has anyone had trouble with any of these plants when overdosing excel?
Anyone think the BBA is from too many nutrients?
Can anyone pinpoint the cause of the BBA?
Should I withhold regular ferts when dosing excel?
Advice/ insite on the Madigascar issue?
Is there anything bad that would result from the 'excel + medication + no carbon in the filter' conditions?
Any advice on the situation?
Thanks!
