Last night when i got in from work i found my 17inch silver Arowana DEAD!!

i tested for Nitrite with a Tetra Test Kit brand spanking new one. and yes it was blood red. but when i test again this morning, there was hardly any trace of nitrite.

i don't quite understand how it could change so quickly? all i added was another power head with a canister on bottom and some carbon and 2 capsules of Tetra BactoZym. this is a 380l Tank. with a couple of clown loaches and pleco's in there. admitedly it runs on a well established (10 years running) undergravel system with 2 x 802 Powerheads. there is no massive amounts of food going in, did a 33% water change day before and the Aro eat day before he died.

any ideas or theorys???

Nitrite can disappear fairly quickly if you have a well established biofilter. As for the dead aro, were there problems with the water previously?

none what so ever. regular water changes. varied diet. nothing aggresive in the tank. body was in perfect condition. real good specimen it was.

very annoying when ya put lots of effort, care and attention into something for it all to end, just like that and no answers for it.

i suppose its bit of an excuse to get The aussie i been craving. may get a Wallago Attu or Brachyplatystoma Juruense too me thinks,

Maybe some ammonia spilled into the tank. I don't really know but if it was at high enough concentration, even for a short time, it could have some nasty effects. And since you have a well established system, it could have been converted pretty quickly. That doesn't explain why the loaches and plecos are still fine though. Pretty weird.
