i had a aquarium for 3 months without adding anything new(no new nails, fish, nada). Then i decided to add a golden mystery snail by it self. Few weeks after i saw a couple of baby snails and a few weeks those i saw more baby snials. Is it possible for a mystery snail to have baby snails of other types that arent golden mystery snails? Because they have different shell shapes.

This is the first snail: http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2qxcdpy&s=9#.WXPoW4jythE

These are some of the babies: http://i66.tinypic.com/206ohv7.jpg

The first babies on the left look like ramshorns to me. The other one on the right looks like it could be a pond snail or other mystery snail of some sorts.

I find snails to be more beneficial than a pest. I would watch your population level though, they may decide your plants are chow if you don't add enough cucumbers or add some extra fish food for them. If you have a population explosion, you can just smoosh them for your fish to eat or add a loach to the tank if you have the space and your fish are compatible.

Oh it wouldn't be possible for it to have any of a different species unless they laid some eggs on it's shell. They probably hitchhiked that way.

I'm guessing in the 3 months the ramshorns have been breeding, they grow fast and will breed fast.

As for the other one maybe that one was also a hitchhiker. IIRC mystery snails need a mate to lay eggs. Unless it was holding some fertile eggs from before! That could explain it.

They could have come in on any plants or used decor too and you just didn't spot them right away.

thanks for the info :)

You would've seen mystery snail eggs. They lay large clusters above the waterline.

You have a pest specie of snail introduced with a previous addition of livestock. Get an assassin snail and hope it doesn't get your mystery or get pea puffers

I beg to differ on terminology. Snails of all kinds have a rightful place in the biodiversity of a tank. It is the fish keeper who makes them a pest by over feeding and, thus, causing the population to explode.

I think you are over thinking this to be honest. Not hating but a pest is classified as an unwanted nuisance. Therefore I refute your difference on terminology because according to the definition the term would appropriately apply. It is not always the keepers fault if they are introduced by accident or on a fish or even by having eggs on a piece of decor.

Snails are often seens as a pest and can even be an issue in well maintained tanks

could be hitchhikers, especially on plants. I have snails showing up a while after I got my last plants
