I have a 240 that houses some motoros, 6 datnoids, 3 juvenile carpintis, a bichir, and 10 4-5" tin foil barbs...

A few times I have caught my large male ray had pinned down a tin foil and tried eating them, but he never did, and never hurt them. They went back to normal after the incident as if it never happened...

I went to bed last night, and all fish were fine.

I woke up this morning to find 6 tin foils dead, 1 almost dead, and 3 hovering at the top of the tank not moving.

They don't have any bites, scratches, or gill marks.. The one dead one had a cloudy eye, so I thought ammonia..

I checked it.. all paramaters are where they should be 0,0,10.. The temp is at 78F.

All other fish are fine.

These are my favorite fish, and I can't for the life of me figure out wtf happened.

Did you have your aquarium well aerated? Tinfoil barbs need a lot of oxygen compared to other fish. That's my only idea. I guess if you've had them for a while that wouldn't be a possiblity unless something caused your oxygen levels to go down. Sorry about your loss.

I've had these fish for about 6 months.. I think longer to be honest with you, and yes.. the tank is aerated more than a tin foil would need. They lived a few months is a super crowded tank with lower oxygen levels than this.

The ones that are alive look way worse that the dead ones.. they do have a few marks on them on their sides, and they are about the size of a thumbtack backing, which makes me think the datnoids maybe beat them up?

I went out and was able to get the last of some smaller tin foils for $1 at petsmart (where I got my first batch)- so I have all the tin foils in another tank so this won't be happening again. Up to 8.. getting more in tomorrow, so I will have my school back.. but just tiny ones.
