I have a 240 that has fish frequently die within a month of introduction. I have/had about 30 ft of polypterus in a tank in the fish room that I moved to this tank 2-3 weeks ago. I have had 3 die this week rather mysteriously. They ranged from 20-25". My PBB is floating this morning, struggling to get to bottom. Not bloated or anything.
I was giving it some thought this morning and realized that new inhabitants are what always die.
Here is water and filter info: city has great water. There is a guy at the water plant that keeps fish, so he is very comfortable with what they do. PH hovers around 7.6 KH 120. ammonia 0. Nitrites 0 nitrates usually under 10, 0 out of tap. I used to have a pretty deep gravel bed but took it down to 1/2" about year ago. Eheim 2262 filled with Poret. MB filter with socks, 150 liters of K1. Return pump is 2600 GPH. Pothos. Any thoughts? Other fish I have had for years have died within months of going in here. Many newly purchased from very reputable dealers. Please give me some help! I can't afford this and am thinking about keeping guppies again!
Thanks

Can water be too clean?

Difference between the tank their taken from and the tank they die in, in terms of:
pH, hardness, adequacy and rates of filtration, cleaning of filter, filter maintainance, differences in media? Anything that may be leaching something toxic into the water, e.g. Ornaments, rocks, substrate. Location and traffic around tank, flow in tank. Tank mates, stressors, any bullies? Past diseases in the receiving tank, etc
You need to compare the differences between the tanks and kind of figure out what the issue may be

you sure its not bichir lice. WC bichir have that all the time. and tend to do that. float around with red blotches and slime coat loss. i loss a retro. till i looked close and saw them.

I have had all of these at least a year. I lose fish when I put them in this tank. Only fish that have been in since I set it up are thriving. That was 3 years ago.

Is this tank in a different room than your other tanks ?? Stray heater current ? What are you cleaning that peticular room with ? Lysol floor cleaner is toxic and it can get into a tank. any wood furniture that you use aerosols to clean ? sounds like poisoning to me if its just that tank in a different room and you ruled out your heaters are not zapping your fish. I would suspect something is getting into your water. Was that tank resealed with mold inhibitor silicone ?

It is in a different room, but the sump is in fish room and pipes go through wall. No chemicals are in fish room. The wife has been instructed, and complies with how and what to use for cleaning. I thought about heaters last night and am checking that today. I know I don't get shocked but could be very low. Acrylic tank I got new and have had about 4 years.

are you only loosing polypterus? In a mature tank the fish can harbor parasites that the resident fish deal with just fine but a naive fish may have trouble with. I wonder if this could happen with bacteria as well.

Also no signs of aggression from long term residence of the tank?
