Looking at Aquabid tonight, I found the following auction:

http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.cgi?fwcichlids&1316489769

He doesn't know what type of fish it is. Now I'm curious as well. It looks like some type of acara, but there are other features that aren't very acara-like -- the pointed face and the gill spot, primarily. Any ideas what this is? Is it even South American? I thought maybe a young Tilapia or something, but I don't know African cichlids well enough.

Looks like a Jewel cichlid, but the face is different.

And the fins. Jewels don't usually have a really wide tail or long, pointed anal and dorsal fins like a South American acara. I did some googling and Oreochromis/tilapia have similar upturned lips, but I can't find any that actually show that sort of coloration.

I'm not interested in buying it. I'm interested in what sort of cichlid it is because I've never seen it before, and I was looking for other opinions on what species this is.

I'm not 100% but I would be willing to bet that it is not a sunfish. In general (there are exceptions but the are few) sunfish do not have pointed fins and their tails have more of a heart shape than a paddle shape. Either way, it is a very interesting fish and I would like to know what it is myself.

I've caught a lot of sunfish in my day and seen a lot of pictures on google. Most sunfish have a 2-lobed tail (V-shaped) as opposed to a fan-shape, right? And shorter, stubbier anal and dorsal fins? This appears to have the opposite of those things. Unless the sunfish I catch in Florida are different from the species that you find elsewhere.
