So a little background first. I got a 5 gal aquarium set up about 6-8 months ago, my first tank since I was a kid and my dad kept fish. I purchased some live plants for it as I'm going for a variant on the walstad method. A week or so after introducing the plants I noticed two small fry swimming in my tank along with the assassin snails I'd included since. Being too small to ID I opted to wait expecting colouration to emerge that might tell me what I have here.

Fast forward to now, there has been no distinct colouration that has emerged. I have far too little experience to even get close to an ID on these guys. Every once in a while I'll see a quick flash of blue on their dorsal crest if they move in the right way. Here are some pictures.

I've been doing my best with my limited experience and knowledge to try to ensure they're healthy but if anyone here is able to point me towards at least a rough ID, that would be an incredible help. Behavior wise they seem to like to forage around the flora and occasionally chase eachother, but otherwise swim near eachother regularly.

Thanks for any input folks! I'm rather out of my depth on this one.

I'm guessing from the shape possibly a Rainbowfish specie.

My first impression was that they look somewhat like one of the Glassfish; Chanda, Ambassis...?

Little surprises like this are one of the joys of the hobby. :)

After some (admittedly rushed) googling, this sounds like it may well be a match for what these guys are! Thanks so much for both of your feedback. I'm gonna keep an eye on them as they grow but thank you! This gives me an idea of what companions they might be okay for, and prepares me for the notion of needing a larger tank once they grow more!

Definitely a fun surprise to watch evolve in my first tank since being a kid! I must admit, I've become somewhat fond of the two little fry.

Thanks again, once again it's MFK forums to the rescue 😊

First look reminded me of one of the Ricefish/Medaka, Oryzias sp., with that dorsal fin set so far back, relatively large eyes and general body shape. Their sudden appearance, presumably from eggs in the live plants, would fit the Oryzias clan also.

Oryzias have only a single soft dorsal fin; these fish appear to have two dorsals. General shape and proportions seem wrong also.

Funnily enough ricefish was what I IDed them as after googling around but was unsatisfied so I came here! Glad I was close enough someone else got the same answer.
