So the other day I was feeding my fishes in my 45 when lo- and be hold on the side of the tank is a snail. I have never in my life bought a snail, never had one in that tank before and here it is, in my tank. Could someone please explain this mystery to me and also, are snails good or bad to have in a tank. Don't they carry a lot of diseases? Should I let it live on in peace or evict it?

what does this snail look like. They dont carry disease anymore than your fish do. Could have piggybacked on a new fish or plant.

I agree with toehead. The same thing happened to me and I figured out that it came in on a plant because that was the only thing I had added to the tank in a long time. Have you added any plants recently? Depending on the snail, a few can turn into a hundred. Once you have that many they can be difficult to get rid of and make you're tank look like it's suffering a snail infestation. Snails can be great additions to tanks though, to eat algea for example.

Yea you may want to get rid of the snail quick. Otherwise you will have a tank full of them faster than you can imagine.

Like Tommy said they come in by plants usually. After I got my planted tank going, about 3 weeks later I had a snail infestation. It happens alot.

it looks more like that ramshorn. I haven't noticed any other snails in the tank and believe me I've been watching, maybe I should feed it to my cat. They're not asexual beings are they? I did add some plants a while back but never noticed the snail, maybe that was due to its small size at the time it's now about the size of a quarter. Is it just me or do those suckers grow fast?
