So petsmart got a shipment of these really cool looking black mystery snails, and i'm tempted to get one. My only question regarding this is will it have a negative effect on my bichirs? I know plecos can suck the slime coat right off of the bichirs are snails the same way or different? Thanks

I have one in each of my tanks (black in the 20, ivory in the 65). They were there before my bichirs so they've been around since the bichirs were as small as they were.

The snails clean up a bit of crap on the bottom (not enough that I don't vacuum all the time, but its still cool) and I've even spotted it cleaning the glass time & again. They're cool to watch, no negative impact, and not costly.

Only thing I can imagine is that the bichirs will eat them once they get large enough. Other than that, completely benign as far as I've seen. In fact I'm tempted to go get a few more and have 3 or 4 in the 65 and 2 or 3 in the 20;)

I too have been tempted to pick up a few of these for my 125 but fear my oscars will make short work of them like they did for the MTS I got a while ago...

i love these snail i plan to get more...even before the babies grow up..and if you end up with a few to many put some clown loaches in there and hey will solve that problem quik

Please don't use clown loaches for snail control unless you have a suitably sized tank (125 gallon minimum) and can house at least 6.
There are quite a few species of botia loaches that will max out at 6" and do just as good a job at snail control... Yoyo, polka dot, zebra loaches are all great.

Mystery Snails will destroy all plants.

this is really the difference maker. can't have em tearin up my plants =\

mystery snails are pomacea diffusa, and they dont' eat plants. Other apple snail species will eat plants.

ooh, glad my thread got moved to this part of the site thanks for correcting him i really want one haha

I haven't noticed mine tearing up any plants.

I am losing leaves at a fairly slow rate, but I think thats more to do with not having nutrients in the substrate or enough light in the tank.

Sometimes the snail will hang out amongst the plants, but he's usually just sitting there dormant and its not often.
